Learn More About Schizophrenia Treatment & Recovery at Seven Hills

Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder in which an individual has impaired perceptions of reality, often being unable to differentiate between what is real and what is not real. For those with schizophrenia, things like colors, sounds, or tastes may appear altered in a strange way. Schizophrenics often experience hallucinations and paranoid or bizarre delusions. Additionally, these individuals may have difficulties organizing their thoughts and expressing themselves. Their speech and behavior can be so disorganized at times that it may be impossible to carry on a conversation with them. All of these symptoms often cause individuals with schizophrenia to socially withdraw as they tend to be afraid of others and others can be afraid of them. Thankfully, with professional help from a treatment center or hospital, schizophrenia symptoms can be successfully managed and overcome.

Helping a Loved One

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Schizophrenia Treatment

If you have a family member or loved one who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, you are going to be his or her main source of support. This can often be a difficult and, at times, overwhelming role. Here is some advice for helping your loved one regarding his or her health and seeking treatment at a hospital or treatment center specializing in schizophrenia:

  • Remember that schizophrenia is a medical illness
  • Do not feel guilty or look for someone to blame because schizophrenia is no one’s fault
  • Educate yourself about this disorder and your loved one’s personal symptoms
  • Establish a daily routine
  • Help your loved one stay on his or her medication
  • Try not to show anxiety or distress
  • Avoid harsh or direct criticism
  • Compliment him or her on achieved goals made while in an out of a treatment at a hospital or treatment center for schizophrenia
  • Take time out for yourself

Remember that when you have a loved one with schizophrenia who relies on you for support, you have to be patient and persistent. While at times you may feel frustrated and hopeless, it is important to remember that your loved one needs your unconditional love and support because it can actually help them to recover more quickly from this terrible disorder.

Types of Treatment Available

Types of Schizophrenia Treatment Offered at Seven Hills Hospital

When you arrive at Seven Hills Hospital at our convenient location near Las Vegas, Nevada, you will first complete a thorough assessment with one of our intake specialists, which will then be reviewed by one of our psychiatrists in order to ensure that we will be able to provide the most appropriate level of care for your specific needs for schizophrenia concerns at our hospital. Once you have been admitted into our center, we provide each patient with his or her own individualized plan of care which will be implemented in a safe, secure, and structured environment. We have an adolescent unit for children between the ages of 11-17, an adult mental health unit, an adult substance abuse treatment unit, an adult rehabilitation unit, and a geriatric unit, all tailored to meet the specific needs of each population while receiving treatment at our hospital. We utilize a number of different therapeutic techniques on each of our units, which include the following:

Detoxification: When adult patients come to us dependent on alcohol or other substances they will first complete the detoxification process in order to remove all toxic substances from the body before fully engaging in the therapeutic process. All patients in our detox center are monitored 24 hours a day by nurses and doctors.

Medication management: Medication is the cornerstone of treatment for individuals suffering from the symptoms of schizophrenia. Antipsychotics are the most common form of medication used because they can help decrease the intensity of psychotic symptoms. Mood-stabilizers and antidepressants may also be used to treat the symptoms of mood swings and depression that may also be present. Every patient who comes to us for treatment is seen within 24 hours by an internal medicine doctor in order to obtain a thorough medical history and to assess for any possible health complications. Additionally, all patients meet with a psychiatrist daily in order to monitor medication.

Individual therapy: Individual counseling sessions can be used to help patients with schizophrenia develop social and work skills that can help improve their lives and relationships. At Seven Hills, individual sessions are held on an as-needed basis.

Family therapy: Since it is very common for individuals with schizophrenia to be discharged back into the care of their family, it is important for family members to educate themselves about this disorder. Family counseling sessions are held on an as-needed basis, except for patients in our adolescent unit who are provided with family sessions once a week. We also have family visitation seven days a week for our adolescent and geriatric patients and five days a week for patients on all other units.

Group therapy: Group therapy is the main treatment method used here at Seven Hills Hospital, and all patients participate in two to three groups daily. Topics of discussion may include coping skills, stress management, anger management, effectively expressing emotions, communication skills, and life skills. For patients who are struggling with chemical dependency, there are also groups aimed at providing education surrounding addictive behaviors and triggers.

Experiential therapy: In addition to the traditional treatment modalities provided at Seven Hills, we provide our patients with a number of other programs designed to help our patients heal. These additional programs may include:

  • Creative arts
  • Meetings with a dietician
  • Physical fitness opportunities
  • Medication education
  • Recreational therapy
  • Music therapy
  • A.A. meetings
Continuing Care

Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment

When patients are ready to be discharged from schizophrenia treatment at our hospital, they will meet with their therapist in order to determine the next best step for their recovery process. Some individuals will benefit from stepping down into one of our outpatient levels of care offered at our schizophrenia treatment center, while others may be ready to return home with referrals for traditional outpatient therapy after leaving our hospital for their schizophrenia concerns. Regardless of what your schizophrenia treatment needs may be, the staff at Seven Hills Hospital will ensure that you are fully prepared to make the transition into the next stage of treatment.

In addition to our acute inpatient treatment center, Seven Hills Hospital, near Las Vegas, also offers outpatient services, which include partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Our PHP and IOP are designed for adults and offer two separate tracks, one for mental health and one for chemical dependency. The partial hospitalization program is held Monday through Friday from 9am until 2pm. Our intensive hospitalization program for mental health is held 3 days a week from 9am until 12pm and the substance abuse program is held 5 days a week from 9am until 12pm. In addition to daily group sessions, both options provide patients with weekly sessions with a psychiatrist, individual sessions on an as-needed basis, and recreational therapy twice a week. Lunch is also provided to patients daily who are enrolled in these treatment options at our hospital.
