Helping a Loved One

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment

Having a loved one with borderline personality disorder can leave family members confused, exhausted, and completely overwhelmed. In many instances, family members are at a loss of what they can do to help, however, there are some specific strategies that you can use to help support your loved one before, during, and after they seek care at a treatment center or hospital for borderline personality disorder. Here are some things that you need in order to be helpful to your loved one:

  • Knowledge about borderline personality disorder
  • Understanding about what your loved one is going through
  • Acceptance that your loved one has a disability and that he or she is doing the best that he or she can
  • Compassion
  • Staying in the present
  • Being nonjudgmental
  • Encourage family involvement
  • Avoid boundaries, limits, contracts, and tough love

In addition to being supportive to your loved one, the most important thing you need to do first is to help them get the right diagnosis and treatment from a quality center or hospital that cares for BPD. You can be helpful during this process by making appointments at treatment centers and hospitals for your loved one and even going with him or her to the appointment. Encourage him or her to stay in treatment and to regularly take any medication that is prescribed in order to help prevent relapse.

Why Consider Us?

Why Consider Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment at Seven Hills Hospital in Las Vegas

BPD affects how you feel about yourself, how you relate to others, and how you behave. An individual with borderline personality disorder will often have an insecure sense of who they are and have a rapidly changing self-image or self-identity. This unstable self-image often causes frequent job changes, friendships, goals, and values. Additionally, some individuals with borderline personality disorder experience brief psychotic episodes and other co-occurring disorders, such as depression and suicidal behaviors.

Those with borderline personality disorder who have severe symptoms often benefit from intensive inpatient care at a treatment center or hospital where they can get a proper diagnosis and treatment to suit their personal needs. Inpatient care at a hospital or treatment center that specializes in care for borderline personality disorder can provide a safe environment while they learn how to properly cope with their symptoms and receive any medication that they may need. Therapy can be provided in group sessions and one-on-one therapy sessions that can help individuals with borderline personality disorder learn to interact with others and be able to express themselves effectively. Additionally, inpatient treatment at BPD hospitals and centers can help families learn to be more supportive of their loved one.

Types of Treatment Available

Types of Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Offered at Seven Hills Hospital

When looking for borderline personality disorder treatment, you or your loved one may have been searching broadly for “treatment centers near me?” In the Las Vegas area, there is one clear choice. At Seven Hills, we accept phone calls or walk-ins for a confidential assessment, free of charge, 24 hours a day 7 days a week at our convenient location near Las Vegas, Nevada. Once you complete a thorough assessment at our treatment center for BPD, one of our psychiatrists will review it in order to approve admission into our center. Once admitted, we make sure that each patient has an individualized plan of care in a structured environment where he or she can feel safe to begin the recovery process. At Seven Hills Hospital, we have an adolescent unit for patients ages 5-17, an adult mental health unit, an adult substance abuse treatment unit, an adult rehab unit, and a Generations unit for adults and geriatric patients with psychiatric diagnoses and higher medical acuity. Your initial assessment will determine which unit you will be placed on while receiving treatment at our hospital. Additionally, we utilize a number of different therapeutic methods, which may include the following:

Detoxification: For our adult patients who come to us chemically dependent on drugs or alcohol, they will first have to go through the detoxification process in order to remove all toxic substances from the body. Our detox center provides 24 hour nursing and doctor supervision. Once detox is completed, you will be able to fully engage in the therapeutic process.

Medication management: In addition to being seen within 24 hours of admission by an internal medical doctor, all patients will see a psychiatrist on a daily basis for medication management. For borderline personality disorder, medications may include antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anti-anxiety drugs. While the medications cannot cure the disorder, they can help to control some of the symptoms of co-occurring disorders that may exist.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions allow patients one-on-one time with a therapist on an as needed basis. This time can be spent helping individuals learn how to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and improve relationships.

Family therapy: Family therapy sessions are held on an as needed basis for all units except the adolescent unit, which is held once a week. Family sessions can be helpful at engaging the whole family in the treatment process and showing family members how to be more supportive.

Group therapy: Group therapy is the primary treatment method at Seven Hills and everyone participates in 2 to 3 groups on a daily basis. Some of the major group topics include: education surrounding addictive behaviors and triggers, coping skills, managing stress, anger management, effectively expressing emotions, and communication and life skills.

Experiential therapy: In addition to traditional therapeutic methods, we offer a number of other programs to help heal our patients. These may include:

  • Creative arts
  • Music therapy
  • Physical fitness opportunities
  • A.A. meetings on Tuesdays and Saturdays
  • Dietician groups on each unit once a week
  • Medication education held by nurses once a week on each unit
